Understanding Irisin. Over the past 800 or so days, I began to wonder how and why:

  1. I published my work faster.

  2. I verbally communicated more clearly.

  3. I began to read voraciously.

  4. I started to work much faster.

  5. I learned to handle more complex math problems.

  6. I found the energy to re-learn some of my college Russian.

  7. I worked shorter hours to accomplish more with less.

Over that time, I embarked on an intensive journey of self-improvement through a number of daily obligations. After studying a number of scientific journals and research documents - many of them will be linked below - I further intensified my pattern of rigorous daily fitness routines. This physical discipline, encompassing no less than three hours of training each day, not only elevated my physical capabilities but profoundly impacted my cognitive performance and productivity during extensive desk-bound work periods.

Intriguingly, despite averaging 8-9 hours of desk time now, as opposed to the 12-15 hours previously, I have witnessed a significant enhancement in my work output and intensity of effort. Then it began to make sense: Irisin is a polypeptide hormone secreted by skeletal muscle; a number of those who stake their careers on scientific research suggest that increased irisin concentrations can improve cognition. Ahhh, maybe there’s something to this.
