Resilient Operators, Elite Optimizers.

Learn how mental resilience, developed through rigorous training and real-world experiences, plays a crucial role in managing stress and overcoming adversity. This essay explores the power of steeling the mind for success in both high-pressure situations and everyday life.

Inspired by a thought-provoking conversation in the Optimization group—a longevity-focused chat made up of HBS alumni, elite athletes, operators, PhDs, MDs, and research scientists—this reflection dives into the experiences of two extraordinary men: a Navy SEAL and a Green Beret.

For over 20 years, they've dedicated their lives to serving in some of the most perilous environments imaginable. The SEAL’s training has pushed him to excel in hostile waters and high-stakes missions, while the Green Beret's expertise in unconventional warfare has seen him maneuver through some of the most unpredictable and dangerous terrains. From [x’s] rugged mountains to covert operations in [y], both have faced immense stress on the battlefield, but they have also cultivated lives far beyond the stereotype of the broken warrior.

I agree with [x] that combat isn’t as stressful in the moment as one might expect. Your choices are pretty limited and you’re running on instinct which has (hopefully) been built on training. It’s not until it’s over that you start to feel the shakies creep in. It’s a feeling not unlike the one when you get the letter from the IRS, get stuck behind seven dump trucks, or are trying to figure out why the trash wasn’t picked up on the day you’re leaving for vacation.

With solid marriages built on trust and shared resilience, and one even raising beautiful children, these men defy the expectations that service members are doomed to struggle with crippling trauma. This conversation serves as a reminder that true strength isn’t just about surviving the battlefield—it’s about thriving in life, family, and relationships, proving that warriors can indeed rise above their past experiences.

Once you’re in the fight, there’s a saying: “When the bullets start flying, you don’t rise to the occasion — you fall back to the level of your training.” That’s what kicks in. Default mode. And default mode is what your team sergeant beat into you. It’s the stress inoculation, the pressure, the discipline. That’s what carries you.
